Healthy businesses are constantly evolving and improving. There are always new skills to learn.
๐Ÿ’ฟ You may have to familiarise yourself with some new software.
๐Ÿ›  Learn how to use a new tool.
๐Ÿ“Š Integrate an updated business process.
๐Ÿ”Ž Incorporate a clever technique to make your current work more efficientโ€ฆ

( ๐Ÿ“š Iโ€™m not asking how you learn information best. Thatโ€™s a topic for another post.) What I want to know is what is:

Methods for learning new skills at work

โœ…โ›” Let me figure it out. I prefer Trial and Error on my own. Iโ€™ll figure it out eventually, and I donโ€™t want to be told what to do!

๐Ÿ“Ž Iโ€™ll do it, with support. You can be the Coach. I like to be active in my learning, but I want some 1-1 guidance along the way.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Letโ€™s learn together. Lead a few of us in a Workshop or Class and weโ€™ll support each other in our efforts.

๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿš„ Give me some Practice Examples to try. If I get the right result, I know Iโ€™ve got a handle on the skill.

๐Ÿ‘€ Show me how itโ€™s done! I want to copy your Modelled Behaviour. All I need is a clear goal.

๐Ÿ“’๐Ÿ“บ Give me super clear instructions. I want the Operations Manual. Images. Videos. Step-by-step instructions. Possible errors. This will give me the confidence and clarity I need to do this new skill well.

My preference

I personally like a very hands-off approach.

For simpler skills, I just want to see it in action. If itโ€™s presented clearly enough, Iโ€™ll be able to figure it out!
For more complex skills, I like to dive in and get my hands dirty, poke around a bit, try, fail, and learn. Then, once Iโ€™ve figured out the basics and I know what I donโ€™t know, I like to have a guide who can fill in the gaps and show me more efficient ways to do this new thing Iโ€™m learning.
